Am I the Right Photographer for Your Family?

Choosing an Austin family photographer can feel a little overwhelming. There are so many styles, so many approaches, so many personalities, and not every photographer is the right match for every family. That’s a good thing. It means you get to find someone whose work feels right for you.

I always tell families that photography is personal. It’s not just about the final gallery, it’s about the energy, the experience, and how you feel during the session.

Before we dive in, I want to be clear about one thing:
These aren’t “rules” for how family photos should be done.

They’re simply how I approach family sessions, and I want to help you decide if that’s the kind of experience you’re looking for.

If you read this and think, “Yes, this feels like us,” then we’ll probably be a wonderful fit. If not, that’s totally okay! There’s a photographer out there who will match your vision perfectly.

That said, here’s 6 signs I’d be a good fit for your family:

1. You Want a Mix of Traditional, Cozy, and Playful Moments

If you love a gallery that blends classic posed shots, cozy candid snuggles, and fun movement, you’re in the right place.

We’ll get the “everyone looking at the camera” shots throughout your session, but the heart of your gallery will come from the moments in between: laughter, quiet cuddles, piggy-back rides, tiny fingers twisting your hair, kids running toward the creek, or you pulling them in close.

The photos in this post were taken at Bull Creek Preserve, and are a great example of the range of photos I provide.

If you’re hoping for a gallery that’s all posed and formal or, on the opposite end, entirely documentary, I’m probably not the photographer you’re looking for. My sweet spot sits right in the middle.

2. You Love Warm, Vibrant, True-to-Life Color

My editing style is clean, warm, and vibrant, keeping colors true to life, with a little richness added in.

I’m careful to keep skin natural and flattering for all skin tones, avoid heavy filters or trendy color washes, and don’t add grain or film overlays. I occasionally use very light matte effects but focus mainly on keeping your images looking like your family, just on their very best day.

If you prefer light and airy, dark and moody, muted earthy/brown tones, or overly painterly editing, your tastes might be better met elsewhere. And that’s totally okay!

3. You Don’t Stress About “Perfect” Kid Behavior — Because I Don’t Either

As a former elementary school teacher and mom to a very spirited 3-year-old (and oh boy are the 3s 3-ing right now, let me tell you…) I’ve seen it all at sessions.

High energy?
Kids who want to explore instead of pose?
Kids who want to RUN in the opposite direction of the camera?
Babies who get fussy the second we start?
Someone suddenly refuses to smile?

None of that worries me.

I come into every single session with zero expectations about how your children “should” behave. I’m not keeping score, I’m not judging, and I’m definitely not getting frustrated with your kids. I completely get it, kids are kids, and their energy, curiosity, and big feelings are part of what makes family sessions so special!

I always have a plan for how to start, and backup plans for when the original plan dissolves in under 30 seconds (which happens more often than you’d think). I adjust quickly, keep things light, and follow your kids’ lead while still guiding without pressure.

4. You Want Help Choosing Outfits

Styling matters! Not because your outfits need to be fancy or Pinterest-perfect, but because clothing can really shape the overall look of your gallery.

If you want a photographer who will help you choose colors, suggest pieces, send links, or steer you away from items that won’t photograph well, I’ve got you. You don’t have to be a fashion expert. I’ll help guide you toward comfortable, natural choices that reflect your family’s personality.

5. You Prefer Outdoor Golden Hour or In-Home Lifestyle Sessions

My sessions typically fall into two categories:

Outdoor golden hour: warm light, movement, texture, and nature
In-home lifestyle: cozy snuggles, real routines, natural connection

I photograph families, maternity, and newborns, but I do not offer posed newborn sessions (when the photographer arranges a sleeping newborn into specific, artistic poses using props, blankets, and accessories), and I rarely shoot in studio settings. Comfort, connection, and natural light are where your family shines best with me.

If you’re dreaming of something more formal or studio-based, you might be happier with a photographer who specializes in that style.

6. You Want a Curated Gallery — Not Hundreds of Images to Sort Through

I don’t deliver huge galleries because I hand-edit every single chosen image with time and care. That often includes:

  • head swaps, so we can get those shots with everyone smiling

  • removing distracting objects

  • brushwork for tiny enhancements

  • meticulous color and tone work

My goal is for every final image to feel intentional, polished, and worth printing.

Before any editing happens, you’ll receive a proof gallery — a larger collection of lightly edited images where you can choose exactly which photos you want in your final gallery. You’re in full control. You’ll never pay for images you don’t love, and you’ll end up with a curated set of photos that feel meaningful to you, not just a random assortment.

If you’re looking for hundreds of lightly edited images with minimal retouching, that’s not my process. My galleries are smaller because they’re crafted with purpose and care.

If You’re Reading This and Thinking “Yes, This Is Exactly What I Want”…
